Leadership. Mrs. Sato tries to
incorporate leadership activities into every curriculum
area. It may involve a small group taking a science
project to kindergarten to provide an explanation or
participation in the Friday “Bible Buddy” program where
eighth graders lead small groups of junior kindergartners
or kindergartners in Bible story activities. Eighth
graders also periodically lead out in chapel programs for
the whole school. Being on the yearbook staff is also a
privilege reserved for eighth graders. Mrs. Sato tries to
emphasize the importance of servant leadership on campus
and the crucial aspects of being good role models to the
younger students.

| Sports. Miramonte offers a
full after-school sports program to qualifying students in
grades 5 - 8. Since this is their last opportunity to
participate, many eighth graders usually try-out and make
the Miramonte sports teams (boys & girls flag
football, coed volleyball, boys & girls basketball,
coed soccer, and coed softball). Students practice after
school during the week and then participate in a Sunday
tournament at the end of their season. During basketball
season, both the girls’ and boys’ teams also play in the
Silicon Valley Athletic League.

| Fund-raising. Eighth graders
participate in a lot of fund-raising throughout the school
year. The main goals are raising money for our Southern
California trip in April and our class gifts to the school
and a charity which are presented at graduation. Beyond
simply raising money, working on fund-raising projects
offers the students an opportunity to learn skills in
organization, team-work, cooperation, decision-making, and
leadership.

| Graduation.
Eighth grade graduation usually takes place on the last
Thursday evening of the school year at the Mountain View
Central SDA Church. The program includes speeches by
various class officers, presentations to parents and
others who have helped the class throughout the year,
musical performances by eighth graders, and a commencement
address given by an individual chosen by the class. The
seventh grade class provides a reception following the
ceremony.
